What Facebook’s New City Guides Feature Means for Travel Marketers

By Brianna Wenner

Those who have updated their mobile Facebook app since March 2 may or may not have noticed the new “City Guides” feature, listed among other features in the bottom right hamburger menu. This addition brings users to a page that displays various major cities across the world and shows a count of how many friends (and who) have been to these locales.

Clicking on a particular city then takes you to that city’s page, featuring different sections like: Places Your Friends Have Been (including hotels,) Places The Locals Go, Upcoming Events (in that city,) and Popular Attractions.

Users can then go a step further by clicking on a place/event – they will then be taken to a page with a call-to-action button such as “Contact Us,” “Call Now,” and even “Book Now.”

This new feature, although somewhat hidden, stresses the importance of accurately representing your brand across all online channels. Travel and hospitality marketers should make sure their Facebook (and other social media) pages are optimized with high quality visuals to entice consumers visiting these pages. Additionally, brands should encourage reviews, shares and check-ins from their guests to increase their visibility and attract new guests via this platform. Last but not least, utilizing your page’s call-to-action button can seal the deal with those planning a trip and generate bookings from this channel.
